1. Bandwidth and committed information rate (CIR)
The single biggest cost driver. A monitoring link carrying SCADA telemetry needs a fraction of the capacity of a crew-welfare or video-conferencing site.
- Committed vs. shared bandwidth — a dedicated CIR (guaranteed throughput) costs more than a contended plan but delivers predictable performance for mission-critical traffic.
- Peak vs. sustained usage — bursty traffic can often use shared plans; constant high load needs committed capacity.
2. Ku-band vs. Ka-band
The right band depends on your location, uptime requirement, and application — not on price alone.
- Ku-band — the workhorse for Egypt and the wider MENA region. Excellent rain-fade resilience, mature coverage, ideal for oil & gas and government sites that cannot tolerate downtime.
- Ka-band — higher throughput per dollar in covered areas, better suited to high-bandwidth enterprise use where some weather sensitivity is acceptable.
3. Hardware (CAPEX)
A one-time cost covering the antenna, modem, block up-converter (BUC), and low-noise block (LNB). Fixed-site terminals differ from stabilized maritime antennas (which track the satellite while a vessel moves) and from rapid-deploy flyaway units. Ruggedized and explosion-proof (ATEX/IECEx) equipment for oil & gas carries a premium.
4. Licensing and regulatory compliance
In Egypt, VSAT operation is regulated by the NTRA (National Telecom Regulatory Authority). Working with a NTRA-licensed VSAT provider means the licensing is already handled — you avoid the cost, delay, and legal exposure of operating an unlicensed link.
